It covers an acreage of more than 27 square kilometers and is located at the tip of the Muara Tebas peninsula at the mouth of the Bako and Kuching Rivers. It is located about 37 kilometers from the town of Kuching. Millions of years of erosion have created a lavish coastline of steep cliffs and stretches of white sandy inlets. Erosion by water at the base of the cliffs has carved out many amazing sea arches and seastacks. The park is remote and can only be reached via a 20 minute boat ride, making it the ideal day trip from Kuching.

Bako is one of the smallest national parks in Sarawak but is considered to be one of its most interesting, with a vast area of rain forest, jungle streams, lavish waterfalls, secluded beaches, abundant wild life and fascinating plant life. There is a well maintained network of sixteen color-coded walking trails. It is one of the most visited parks in all of Sarawak.

Bako contains nearly every type of plant life existing in Borneo with more than 25 distinct types of vegetation from seven complete ecosystems, including beach vegetation, cliff vegetation, heath forest, mangrove forest, grasslands and peat swamp forest. There are a wide variety of carnivorous plants in the park. There are also about 150 endangered proboscis monkeys that are endemic to Borneo. There are many macaques, monitor lizards, plantain squirrels, pigs and otters.
